A City of Saskatoon street sweeper has tipped for the second time in less than a month.

Fire crews were called Thursday night to the corner of Wedge Road and George Road, in the city’s Dundonald neighbourhood.

A city sweeper tipped on its side while the driver was still inside, the fire department said in a media release.

Rescue crews stabilized the vehicle before the driver, who was uninjured, was able to exit. A tow truck, alongside a winch on one of the fire engines, moved the sweeper to an upright position.

The incident was the second time this month a street sweeper tipped.

Rescue crews were dispatched Aug. 4 after a sweeper tipped at Avenue A and 19th Street. The woman driving the sweeper was trapped in the vehicle’s cab. She was uninjured, but only able to escape after fire crews stabilized the vehicle.

City crews are investigating the latest incident.

“We are glad that no one was hurt in this incident,” said Pat Hyde, the city’s public works director.

“As with any vehicle or equipment incident that may occur, we’re conducting an internal investigation to determine if operator error or if any mechanical issue played a role in the sweeper tipping.”

A city spokesperson couldn’t recall any other instances in recent history when a sweeper has tipped in Saskatoon.
