A highway to Candle Lake was closed for several hours Monday night during a standoff between RCMP and an allegedly armed man.
Police responded to a call of a distraught man at the Candle Lake Gun Range on Highway 120, about 10 kilometres south of the Candle Lake village in northern Saskatchewan, around 6:30 p.m.
The 31-year-old man was allegedly armed with multiple guns and witnesses heard shots fired, according to RCMP. He was threatening to harm himself.
Police blocked off the highway and were able to contact the man via telephone. He surrendered peacefully around 9:20 p.m. and was taken into police custody.
RCMP said his wife and children were at the scene earlier in the day, but were taken to safety.
The man was not injured during the standoff. Several firearms were seized at the scene, according to police.
Charges are still being considered, RCMP said.
