Six boys ranging in age from 12 to 17 were arrested early Wednesday after a police chase extended from Saskatoon’s Grosvenor Park neighbourhood to the Airport area.

A patrol officer spotted a vehicle run a stop sign at Preston Avenue and Main Street shortly after 5 a.m. The vehicle pulled over after the police cruiser’s emergency lights were activated, but as the officer walked towards the suspect vehicle, the driver sped off, according to a Saskatoon police media release.

The vehicle was observed a few minutes later near Attridge Drive and Central Avenue. Police laid out a spike belt, puncturing the front passenger tire, as the vehicle exited off Attridge onto Circle Drive West.

The driver, however, continued travelling westbound and police were forced to cancel the chase due to high speeds and public safety concerns.

A police canine unit then spotted the vehicle turning northbound onto Airport Drive before witnessing six occupants abandon the vehicle.

The suspects were apprehended by police shortly after.

All six youth were charged with possession of a stolen vehicle over $5,000. The driver, a 14-year-old boy, was also charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, evading police and four breaches of undertaking.

The youth are scheduled to appear in Saskatoon provincial court Wednesday afternoon.
