SaskPower says it will spend more than $550 million to ramp up natural gas electricity generation at the Queen Elizabeth Power Station in Saskatoon.

The Crown corporation plans to add 200 megawatts of power output at the facility, boosting its capacity to 630 megawatts.

The project will involve the construction of three natural gas turbines, six steam generators and a steam turbine.

The upgrades will generate enough electricity to power 200,000 homes and are expected to be operational in 2015.
