Students at Riverside Community School in Prince Albert received a special gift today - free backpacks and school supplies from SaskPower.
The school was randomly chosen from a group of schools in the area that SaskPower has a business presence in. Supplies were donated by employees of SaskPower, and all 440 students at Riverside received a backpack filled with everything from pencils to crayons.
"For our kids, it means everyone will have supplies, and everyone will have a backpack," says Principal Mona Markwart. "They will have everything matching, so there’s no haves and have-nots, we're all on an even field.”
This is the third year SaskPower has donated the backpacks and supplies, and they say they're always a hit with the students.
"It’s amazing to see a child’s shoulders fold as the old backpack falls off," said Pauline Streete, Diversity Leader of SaskPower. "The kids are grateful and they do appreciate it. It’s quite a sight to see".
Over 27,000 different items were donated in total.
