A man has been charged with first-degree murder in the 2010 death of an ATM serviceman who police say was carrying tens of thousands of dollars at the time of his death.

RCMP major crime investigators arrested Daniel Smith, 57, of the Biggar-area on Wednesday and charged him with murder in the 2010 death of Roger Byer. The two knew each other, according to police.

Smith was scheduled to appear Thursday morning in Saskatoon provincial court.

Byer, who was 57 at the time of his death, was reported missing about one week after he was last seen Jan. 20, 2010, in Melfort. Aerial and ground searches at the time failed to locate Byer or his vehicle, and his body was not discovered until two months later at abandoned farm site south of Highway 41 between Yellow Creek and Meskanaw.

RCMP and Byer’s daughter made a public appeal earlier this month for information on the case after investigators said they had received new information relating to a black, heavy-duty, work truck that was in the Highway 41 area at the time Byer disappeared.

At the time, RCMP said investigators believed there were at least two people in the vehicle and were asking that other people who may have been in the area at the time of Byer's disappearance come forward with information.

RCMP said media coverage and public assistance helped lead to the arrest of Byers, who is linked to the black truck.
