Saskatoon’s newest bridge is officially greeting drivers with its new name — the Gordie Howe Bridge.

The city added the text “Gordie Howe Bridge” to the bridge’s existing sign just in time for Sunday’s Thank You, Mr. Hockey Day.

The Howe family will be in the city this weekend when Howe’s ashes will be interred alongside those of his wife Colleen at the foot of the Mr. Hockey statue at the SaskTel Centre. The private ceremony will take place Sunday morning before the Thank You, Mr. Hockey Day events kick off.

A number of public events are planned for the day, including a tribute ceremony and tailgate party ahead of the Saskatoon Blades’ season home opener against Swift Current.
