A shocking case of animal cruelty in Prince Albert has led to an SPCA investigation.
Earlier this week, 22 cats were dumped on a property over two days in the rural municipality of Prince Albert. Several of the cats had been drowned or had their backs broken.
The cats were left on Diane Campbell’s land. While holding one of the cats that’s still alive, she told CTV News, “While I was picking her up I looked around and saw numerous other kittens. I came across 18, alive, dead,” she said.
The next day four more were dumped on her property. In total, 11 of the 22 cats are dead.
“I really don’t know what’s in some people’s mind. If they have a problem with cats, call the proper agency, they’ll dispose of them. Please don’t do this to an animal,” Campbell said.
Campbell quickly contacted the SPCA to help deal with the animals.
The cats were scanned for microchips to see if they matched any cats reported missing in the area.
The surviving cats are being cared for by Campbell.
The SPCA said criminal charges are a possibility. “We can lay charges under our animal protection act. There are varying degrees of fines up to $25,000,” said Debbie Lehner, manager of the Prince Albert SPCA.
This is just the latest of a long list of animal cruelty cases the Prince Albert SPCA has dealt with in recent months. Not long ago they found a box of live kittens left to die in a dumpster, and earlier this year a backpack of kittens was left underneath the wheels of a school bus.
“Hopefully someone who knows where these cats came from can contact us and let us know. Then we can take it from there,” Lehner said.
