A Saskatoon business received a chilly reception this weekend after a spring frost left a lot of residents scrambling to cover up their plants.

Ben Kapteyn told CTV he noticed Friday that the Great Canadian Oil Change on Eighth Street covered up one of their palm trees with a Canadian flag — an act he felt was disrespectful.

He asked the manager to remove the flag, but when he came back Saturday, a tarp was sitting on top of it.

“It’s a slap in the face to all veterans and all Canadians,” said Kapteyn. “It’s our national flag. It represents Canada. So many hundreds of thousands of people have served and died in the name of that flag and our country.”

The owner has since apologized, saying that by the time he learned about the frost warning, it was too late to buy a tarp. The flag was the only way to protect the palm tree, he said.

He has since asked his staff to remove the flag and said it won't happen again.
