A suspect is in RCMP custody after a lengthy incident — described by police as a “distraught male” in a residence — saw homes and a school evacuated in North Battleford.

Officers were called to a residence on the city’s 111 Avenue sometime before 11:45 a.m. Thursday. The call involved a “distraught male,” RCMP said.

Blockades were set up in the area and nearby St. Mary’s Community School was placed on lockdown for about an hour before staff and students were sent to Notre Dame Elementary School.

Parents were told they could pick up their children from Notre Dame.

Police have so far provided little detail on the incident but stated in a media release just before 5 p.m. that homes on the 1400 block of 111 Avenue were also evacuated.

The suspect was taken into custody sometime before 5:30 p.m.
