Some unique grasslands near Saskatoon are getting some added protection.
The Northeast swale is a stretch of natural grass and wetlands, along the South Saskatchewan River valley near Saskatoon.
On Friday morning the Royal Bank donated 30,000 dollars to the Meewasin Valley Authority – the organization that looks after the river valley in Saskatoon.
“There’s a different level of understanding from the public that's required to see the value and beauty of it,” said Mike Velonas, with MVA.
“It's not as obvious as the river, for example,” he said.
The money will be used to preserve and protect the swale, including more public education.
Velonas believes it is an investment in the future.
“We hope a generation from now, people will look back and say Saskatoon is known for its beautiful river valley, and for its wonderful connected natural areas,” he said.
