A city high school could be losing its controversial team name and logo.

The Saskatoon Public School board will consider a motion Tuesday that would see Bedford Road Collegiate end the use of the “Redmen” team name and the logo that features the profile of a First Nations man wearing a headdress.

If the motion passes, the school would be tasked with replacing the name and logo in time for the start of the 2014-15 school year.

The Redmen name has been at the centre of a long-standing debate with some calling it racist and saying the name creates a negative image for the school and a hostile environment for First Nations students.

The name first referred to the red uniforms athletes wore when the school opened in the 1920s. The logo first came into use during the 1960s and has received alterations over the years.
