An 18-year-old man and a youth are facing charges after a lengthy police chase in rural Saskatchewan.
RCMP responded to a break and enter at a farm in the R.M. of Battle River — near North Battleford — around 5 a.m. Friday.
Three trucks were spotted on scene but as police attempted to stop the vehicles, the drivers fled.
One of the trucks — a Chevrolet Silverado — was spotted again a short while later. Police pursued the truck eastbound on Highway 16 and attempted to use a spike belt to stop the driver, but the driver still refused to pull over.
RCMP in a nearby district then attempted to intercept the vehicle, which led the driver to turn onto a grid road before reversing and slamming into a marked police cruiser.
A short while later, police said, the driver and passenger were taken into custody. The truck was recovered south of Highway 16 near Delmas, Sask.
The 18-year-old, who police said was driving the truck, is facing numerous charges including break and enter, failing to stop for police, possessing stolen property, impaired driving and assaulting a police officer with a weapon — the truck and a bottle. The youth faces similar charges.
Both are from the Red Pheasant First Nation and are set to appear in North Battleford provincial court Monday.
The RCMP officer in the vehicle struck by the truck was sent to hospital but released shortly after.
The other two trucks involved in the initial call were recovered on the Red Pheasant First Nation, police said.
