The 16-year-old girl accused of killing a six-week-old baby in Saskatoon appeared in court on Monday.

The Crown says they will be seeking an adult sentence for the girl, who has been charged with second-degree murder.

They have also ordered the accused to undergo a 30 day psychiatric assessment.

Baby Nikosis Jace was killed on July 3. Police were called to the 200 block of Waterloo Crescent in the city’s College Park neighbourhood around 7:00 a.m. for a report of an injured baby.

The baby was taken to the Royal University Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

The teen was taken into custody the same day, and charged with second-degree murder.

His family says they did not know the girl, but they decided to help her out after meeting her downtown.

A provincial spokesperson says the teen ran away from Kilburn Hall Youth Facility the day before Nikosis was killed.

According to court documents the teen was serving a 10-month open custody sentence for a number of offences from 2015 in North Battleford, including three break and enter, arson, assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, and robbery with a weapon.

In addition to the second-degree murder charge, she was also charged with escape lawful custody.

The teen is scheduled to appear in court again in August.
