Family, friends and neighbours came to a candlelight vigil Tuesday night in Saskatoon to remember a six-week-old boy killed over the weekend.

The vigil was held outside the home where Nikosis Jace Cantree died last weekend.

The infant was found injured after emergency crews were called to the house Sunday morning. The child later died in hospital.

A 16-year-old-girl is charged with second-degree murder in the death. The victim’s family say they had only met the teen that day, and tried to help her when she told them she had nowhere to go.

The Saskatchewan government says the girl was serving an open-custody sentence at Kilburn Youth Centre for a string of offences. She escaped the day before the death.
