Low sales are prompting the closure of a Saskatoon grocery store that serves the city’s core west-side neighbourhoods.

The Good Food Junction store will close Jan. 27, the co-operative’s board announced in a media release Thursday.

“Unfortunately, the co-op was not able to meet our customers’ expectations with respect to product offering and prices. The co-op’s low sales reflect this,” the board’s vice-chair Audra Krueger said.

“Our inability to overcome the complex challenges of running an independent grocery store in an underserved community made the decision to close the store necessary.”

The store opened in September 2012, at Station 20 West in the city’s Pleasant Hill neighbourhood, with the goal of introducing affordable and fresh food to Saskatoon’s core west-side areas.

The co-op has since grown to more than 1,800 members.

“Despite strong member growth and unwavering core support, the store could not generate sufficient sales in the highly competitive, low-margin, grocery industry to sustain itself,” Krueger said.

A liquidation sale will begin at the Good Food Junction store on Jan. 15.
