A former Canada Post employee in Saskatoon has admitted to stealing mail.

Anna Heinbigner pleaded guilty in Saskatoon Provincial Court Monday to theft under $5,000 and theft from mail.

Court heard the 51-year-old, who worked at one of Canada Post’s Saskatoon depots, stole gift cards between October and December of last year.

She was caught on camera stealing after Canada Post called in its corporate security division to investigate suspicious activity.

Heinbigner told court she had no explanation for the thefts, and her defence lawyer told media she’s sorry for her actions.

“She understood this was going to have to be dealt with. She’s faced the consequences head on. She’s lost her job, and now has dealt with the court process,” defence lawyer Kevin Hill said.

“Certainly she’s very remorseful for what happened, what she’s done. Certainly a lot of tears shed by her.”

Canada Post would not comment on the case, and the union representing Canada’s postal workers said the incident does not represent postal employees.

“The Canadian Union of Postal Workers wants the public to know and understand that this circumstance that happened with this individual in no way reflects the normal postal worker that is viewed by Canadians as trustworthy and notable in our communities,” Julee Sanderson, president of CUPW Local 824, said.

Heinbigner was a Canada Post employee for 14 years. She was sentenced to 18 months probation and 100 hours of community service.
