Community leaders from Cumberland House and Cumberland House Cree Nation are looking evacuated homes and remaining animals in the area.
“We would like to reassure community members that security for all is being provided around the clock,” said Cumberland House Cree Nation Chief Lorne Stewart in a press release. “ There are also personnel solely assigned to feeding and dealing with family pets left in the community due to the evacuation,” he said.
Cumberland House Mayor Val Deschambeault said construction has been underway non-stop since June 23. “We want to let our people know that the communities are safe and secure,” she said.
The approximately 110 people left in the area have food provided by the Charlebois School, and pet food is being flown in as it’s needed, and two local stores have also been providing food for the animals in the community.
Both Stewart and Deschambeault plan to visit the evacuation centers July 1 to update their community members about the situation at home.
For evacuees looking for updates before then, then two leaders have created a Facebook page to keep everyone up to date.
