Saskatoon city councillor Darren Hill is calling for changes to how bridges are cleared of snow, following an accident yesterday where a vehicle plunged into the South Saskatchewan River.
Police say the driver, a 23-year old woman, was travelling on Saskatoon’s North Circle Drive when she lost control of her car around 1 p.m.
“I think in the future we should be hauling the snow off the bridges and overpasses once a certain amount is accumulated,” said Hill.
He said the city should look at implementing a policy that would ensure snow is cleared away from bridges before it can pile up significantly, creating a ramp of sorts.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, though police have ruled out alcohol as a factor.
The driver managed to climb out onto the roof of her car and onto a piece of ice as the vehicle was sinking.
After being helped to safety by first responders, she was transported to the Royal University Hospital.
The woman suffered only minor injuries, and is expected to make a full recovery.
