“We’re getting ready for a flood. We know it’s going to happen,” said Judy Harwood, reeve of the RM of Corman Park.
People living in the RM aren’t under any illusions, with piles of snow ready to melt, and two years of heavy flooding already behind them, they’re bracing for the worst. The area already has twice the moisture in its current snow pack than in 2011.
“There’s a lot of moisture, and it’s got to go somewhere,” Harwood said.
The RM is digging trenches so that when the melt does come, they can try and direct the funoff to the river. With temperatures forecasted to reach 10 C next week, they’re thinking the worst is coming fast. However, Harwood said residents in the area have dealt with flooding in the past, and she hopes that they’ll be prepared.
It’s more than just homes at risk. Businesses at an industrial complex in the area are also worried they’ll be flooded out.
“Basically we have a large flat ground and there isn’t proper drainage,” explained Robert Phillips. president and CEO of Commercial Sandblasting and Paint.
For now, not much snow has melted, and the RM is telling residents to prepare for the worst.
