SGI is taking the city to court.
Saskatchewan Government Insurance filed a statement of claim Dec. 2 against the City of Saskatoon in the name of Breanna Pegg, a woman whose car ramped over a Circle Drive Bridge guardrail and plunged 13 metres into the South Saskatchewan River last December.
The insurance agency is seeking over $19,000 to cover the costs of reimbursing Pegg and of retrieving her vehicle from the river.
Pegg’s car hit snow piled along the side of the bridge before sliding along the guardrail and dropping to the river. Pegg, then 23 years old, kicked a hole out her car’s windshield as the car sat on the ice. She was forced to swim to a thin sheet of ice as the vehicle began to sink, and eventually crawled to safety.
SGI’s legal filing against the city claims the city failed to clear snow from the guardrail, to install barricades along the bridge and to properly alert motorists of hazardous road conditions.
The Crown corporation reimbursed Pegg nearly $8,000 for her vehicle — a 2002 Acura RSX — and paid over $11,000 to pull the car from the water, according to the statement.
City officials told CTV they’re still reviewing the claim.
The city, shortly after the incident, removed the accumulation of snow and ice on the bridge and changed its protocol for snow removal on bridges.
Pegg’s car was retrieved from the river on July 21, seven months after the incident.
