Expect detours on Broadway Avenue this summer.

The city will begin a five-month-long project to upgrade water mains and resurface roads on and along Broadway Avenue on May 2.

"Deferring this project would result in further deterioration and increase future construction costs," said the city's director of construction and design, Celene Anger.

The first phase of the project will see Broadway Bridge close for about a week.

Water main replacement will then begin along the avenue before construction moves to side roads, such as 10th, 11th and 12th streets and Main Street.

Broadway Avenue will remain open for business during the summer-long project, according to the city. Events like the Fringe Festival and Broadway Street Fair will go ahead.
