RCMP have confirmed that Alvin Buckwold is facing a charge of second degree murder.

Alvin is the 31-year-old son of Ian Buckwold, who was found dead at a home at a beach community on Emma Lake.

Prince Albert RCMP received a complaint of a sudden death on Marine Drive in the community of Emma Lake at approximately 5:20 p.m. on July 14. When they arrived they found the body of Ian Buckwold inside and his son was arrested on the scene without incident.

Buckwold was a prominent Saskatoon lawyer and advocate for those struggling with mental illness, and according to his friend and neighbour Mike Laliberte started supporting that community because of his son’s own struggles.

"They donated time, money, and energy to their fundraising efforts, and I think it was because of their son’s history," Laliberte said.

Laliberte and the Buckwolds were neighbours while their children grew up. “There were some issues, certainly,” he said of Alvin Buckwold’s mental illness.

Buckwold and Laliberte met long before they shared a fence. The two knew each other in high school, and later, they were business acquaintances. The two got to know each other more once they lived side by side.

The two men would share their expertise with one another, Buckwold his legal knowledge, and Laliberte, his mechanical skills. Both men shared an interest in motorcycles and could be found tinkering over bikes while indulging in a drink.

Laliberte had just returned from a motorcycle trip to British Columbia when he heard the news of Buckwold’s death. He said his initial reaction was one of shock and devastation for the entire family. “When you think what it's done to the family unit because of the way it happened, it’s just a total tragic, shocking incident,” he said.

While Buckwold will be remembered for his generosity to the city of Saskatoon, Laliberte said his generosity was also extremely personal.

“I’ll remember him always as being someone who would give you the shirt off his back."

Alvin Buckwold is expected to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court Tuesday.
