A law student from the University of Saskatchewan has become the first fiddler from the province to win the title of Grand Master.

James Steele of Saskatoon won the title, along with a $3,500 cash prize, at a national fiddling competition in the city Saturday.

The second- and third-place finishers were both from Ontario.

It’s the first time in its 24-year history that the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Competition has been held outside of Ottawa.

The sold-out event was held at Lakeview Church in Saskatoon.
