Saskatoon and Regina are teaming up to help the province go green. The two cities are taking part in “Dishing the Dirt”, a project being run by the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council (SWRC).

“The ultimate goal of the project is to release a series of guides for households in Saskatoon and Regina to help them look at their own situation,” says Compost Education Coordinator with the SWRC Lisa Howse.

The project will put 23 different systems to the test at volunteer households over the course of the next year. Once the test phase is complete the data will be complied and used to make the composting guide. Howse says they want to make composting easy for people right off the bat.

It is estimated that one household can cut down on 250-350 kilograms of waste per year with backyard composting. These compostable materials account for 30 to 50 per cent of materials that go into landfills.
