In just the first three months of 2013, the City of Saskatoon has had 25 more claims for pothole, rut, and sinkhole damage than in all of 2012.

Of the 165 claims filed so far this year, 119 were filed in April.

The number of claims is high, and some motorists aren’t hopeful about getting results. “I’m probably one in hundreds who have filed claims for pothole damage and since my damage wasn’t too extensive, I have a feeling it probably won’t be covered,” said Tia Cheveldae, who damaged the two left tires on her car on a pothole two weeks ago.

Claims go to Public Works to determine if the city is liable for the damage – they prepare a report that includes photos and complaints about the area.

“We would look at those facts, the statute law, the case law, and make a decision about liability,” Patricia Warwick, Saskatoon’s City Solicitor, said

It can take up to six weeks to decide whether or not the city is liable, however, those who have made claims for rut damage shouldn’t hold their breath. “As a general statement, the city does not pay out money on rutting claims.” Warwick, said.

“Rutting claims are attributed to winter driving conditions.”

Last year the city paid less than 25 per cent of damage claims due to potholes, sinkholes, and ruts. So far no claims have been paid in 2013.
