A pair of correction officers will spend their weekend camped out on a roof in Saskatoon to raise money for Special Olympics Saskatchewan.

Desiree Hesson and Wade Madland are sweating it out in the summer heat as part of the first annual Free Our Finest event. The duo will stay on top of scaffolding beside the Preston Crossing Walmart until 2 p.m. Sunday, or until $20,000 is raised.

Members of Saskatoon police will be on hand collecting donations throughout the weekend.

Special Olympics Saskatchewan’s director of marketing Chelsea Fidler said the event hits home for a lot of Saskatoon police members.

“A few of our officers actually have family members and friends that have intellectual disabilities that are participating in our programming,” she said. “I think it's kind of just that full circle, you know, you're seeing the participation and you're seeing the joy that the sport is bringing to all of our athletes and then you're also able to help out and help make that happen.”

The initiative is part of the Law Enforcement Torch run, which is the Special Olympics’ largest grassroots fundraiser. All money raised will go towards programming, provincial games and any other costs needed to support Special Olympics athletes.
