Saskatoon police believe they’ve seized a drug responsible for 10 life-threatening emergencies last December.

Officers arrested an 18-year-old man after searching a home on the 100 block of Fifth Street East Thursday. Approximately 500 grams of amphetamine, 48.5 grams of marijuana and 11.4 grams of psilocybin were seized during the search, police said in a media release.

“Investigators believe the amphetamine seized is the same drug responsible for 10 life-threatening medical emergencies in Saskatoon on December 20, 2014,” the release stated. The illegal substances — initially believed to be cocaine or ecstasy — taken in those emergencies were cut with dangerous chemicals.

The search of the home was executed after a package, being shipped to Saskatoon from China, was intercepted last month. The package contained a significant amount of amphetamine, police said.

The 18-year-old has since been charged with numerous drug offences — possession of amphetamines for purpose of trafficking, possession of marijuana, possession of cannabis resin, possession of psilocybin, importation of amphetamine and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

He was scheduled to appear in court Friday.
