A man accused of stealing millions of dollars from the Whitecap Dakota First Nation is now facing additional charges.

Hugo Gallegos, the First Nation’s former accountant, appeared in Saskatoon provincial court Tuesday morning to face four additional charges — theft over $5,000, fraud over $5,000, possessing the proceeds of crime over $5,000 and laundering the proceeds of crime.

The new charges cover offences that occurred between January 2009 and July 2013.

Gallegos was first charged in September 2013 with theft over $5,000 after discrepancies were found in the Whitecap Dakota accounts. The First Nation alleged he stole $2.5 million.

RCMP issued a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest shortly after charges were laid. Gallegos was believed to have fled the country to his native El Salvador.

He returned to Canada on Oct. 29, 2013 and voluntarily appeared in Saskatoon provincial court two days later. He was charged with theft over $5,000 and fraud over $5,000 in relation to offences that occurred in July 2013.
