A Saskatoon intersection was almost used as a helicopter landing pad Tuesday night.

Police and firefighters were called to help block off a section of College Drive near Royal University Hospital to allow a STARS air ambulance helicopter to land.

The helicopter was transporting a patient with critical injuries and because time was of the essence the improvised landing pad was considered.

In the end, however, the helicopter landed at its usual location near Wilson's Greenhouse on Highway 5.

The patient was then transported to hospital by ambulance.

There is no word on the patient's condition or nature of his or her injuries.

The helicopter air ambulance service marked its one-year anniversary in Saskatoon on Tuesday, but it does not yet have a permanent helipad adjacent to the hospital.
