A number of people were forced out of their homes after fire broke out at a Saskatoon apartment on Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called to Russel Road around 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

When they arrived, flames and smoke were coming from a third floor balcony of an apartment building.

Crews checked the building and made sure all the third floor residents had evacuated.

They were able to get the blaze under control within a half hour.

An investigator has determined that careless disposal of smoking material caused the fire. Damage is estimated at $50,000.

No one was injured as a result of the fire.
