A 15-year-old boy charged with second degree murder made his first court appearance Tuesday morning.

The accused is charged in connection with the shooting death of a 28-year-old man last Thursday. Police were called to the 600 block of Avenue H South, where they discovered Jaren Tyler Jahnke, also known as Jaren Tyler Lafond, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital where he later died.

The mother of the victim, Grace Barr, believes her son may have been a victim of gang-related violence.

"Something has to be done," says Barr. "Parents are not taking responsibility for raising their sons. Our courts are filled with youth that keep getting out and getting out."

The 15-year-old accused remains in custody and is scheduled back in court next Tuesday.
