A 50-year-old woman is believed to be dead after she climbed over the railing of the University Bridge in Saskatoon and jumped into the South Saskatchewan River on Tuesday night.

A water rescue team deployed a boat into the water to try and locate the woman. A police airplane was also called in to assist with the search, which lasted for about 90 minutes.

Police say the rescue effort was not successful, largely due to inadequate lighting conditions.
