An MP from Saskatchewan is one of three backbench conservatives asking the RCMP to investigate some abortions as murders.

Maurice Vellacott, MP for Saskatoon-Wanuskewin, said there are nearly 500 incidents of “born alive” abortions in Canada. These are abortions where fetuses that were born alive in an abortion attempt later died.

Prime Minister Harper was asked to clarify the government’s position on abortions.

“I think all members of this House, whether they agree with it or not, understand that abortion is legal in Canada, and this government and myself included have made it very clear that the government does not intend to change the law in this regard,” Harper responded.

Monday marked the 25th anniversary of a supreme court ruling in the case of Dr. Henry Mogentaler that Canada’s ban on abortion violated women’s rights.
