Two construction workers are being credited with saving a family from a burning house Wednesday morning on Avenue J North.
Darren Kaytor and Mike Oberg were driving to their work site around 8:30 a.m. when they passed the flaming home. They saw some of the family members running out.
Oberg went into the home and found a girl still inside. He and Kaytor then rushed to the back of the home to help one of the family members get the girl out.
The men also heard the cries of the family's pet, a Chihuahua, but the smoke was too thick to save the dog. The pair then led the family down the block to a safe location.
All six family members got out safely and were treated by paramedics on scene. Fire fighters were able to get the blaze under control. No word yet on how the fire started.
