Female dead after car plunges into water at Ashbridges Bay in Toronto

A female pulled from a vehicle submerged in the water at Ashbridges Bay on Sunday night has died in hospital, Toronto police say.

Emergency crews were first called to Ashbridges Bay Park Road, located south of Lake Shore Boulevard East and Lower Coxwell Avenue, at 9:30 p.m. for reports of a vehicle submerged in the water.

Police said officers from 55 Division arrived “within minutes.”

Toronto Fire previously told CP24 that a male was on the roof of the vehicle when emergency crews first arrived on scene.

“The adult male driver was out of the vehicle, however there was a female passenger that was still inside the car,” Const. Viktor Sarudi said in a video posted on social media on Monday.

“Officers entered the freezing water and began a rescue attempt of the passenger.”

Both the driver and the passenger were transported to hospital for treatment but police confirmed that the female died on Monday morning.

Four officers who responded to the scene on Sunday night were transported to hospital due to “exposure to the elements,” police said.

The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to contact investigators.
