Members of Saskatoon’s Muslim community gathered on Sunday morning for the Festival of Breaking of the Fast.
More than 9,000 people filled Hall E of Prairieland Park for Eid al-Fitr. The celebration on the Islamic calendar marks the end of the month of Ramadan. After fasting for the month, people came together to pray and give gifts to the less fortunate.
The Islamic Association of Saskatchewan says the event increases in size every year and is a testament to Saskatoon’s diverse Muslim community.
“The diversity that the Muslim community brings to Saskatoon, to Saskatchewan, to Canada in general is wonderful,” Mateen Raazi from the Islamic Association said. “I think it’s great to see different ideas, different perspectives, different ways of living from respective countries of origin become a part of the Canadian mainstream.”
Organizers say this is the largest congregation of Muslims in Saskatoon under the representation of the Islamic Association of Saskatchewan.
