The search for a suspect in a fatal shooting on the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation has ended.

Around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, police located a 59-year-old man who was believed to be responsible for the shooting.

While they were on scene, the suspect suffered a gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital in Shellbrook where he was pronounced dead.

Police say they did not discharge their weapons at the scene.

Around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Mounties received several calls about a person firing a gun near the health centre on the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation.

A person dressed in camouflage and driving an all-terrain vehicle was seen fleeing the area.

Police confirmed that a 56-year-old man was killed during the incident. No one else was injured.

Officers from four nearby RCMP detachments, as well as canine teams and major crimes investigators, were brought in to search for the shooter.

Residents were asked to stay inside their homes while the search was conducted.

The RCMP is now asking the Saskatoon Police Service to conduct an independent investigation into the death of the suspect.

Police do not believe there are any additional suspects in the case.
