Two Saskatchewan Penitentiary inmates have died in custody over the last 24 hours, Correctional Service Canada says.
The federal agency has issued two news releases since late Wednesday morning — the first outlining the death of Daniel James Tokarchuk and the second outlining the death of Christopher Andrew Van Camp.
Tokarchuk, who was serving a sentence for second-degree murder, mischief and failure to comply at the Prince Albert prison, was pronounced dead shortly before 4:30 a.m. Wednesday after he was taken to hospital.
The second news release did not clarify the exact time of Van Camp's death or where he was pronounced dead, but stated he died Wednesday after emergency crews were unable to resuscitate him. The release was sent out at about 5:45 p.m.
The 37-year-old Van Camp had been serving a roughly five-and-a-half-year sentence for armed robbery, fraud and several other charges since June 2012.
Tokarchuk, a 44-year-old Manitoba man, was in prison for the 2002 shooting death of Trevor Savoie, an associate of the Hells Angels.
It’s unclear if the two inmates' deaths are related.
They are the second and third Saskatchewan Penitentiary inmate deaths in the last several weeks. Curtis Robert Cozart died in hospital May 24, shortly after emergency services were called to the prison.
Correctional Service Canada is reviewing all three deaths.
