For the first time, Saskatoon police officers administered naloxone to a 19-year-old and brought that victim back to consciousness.

On Wednesday evening, officers arrived at a home in the 800 block of Sixth Street East. Police say a 19-year-old had overdosed on fentanyl. Officers gave the teen naloxone, an emergency overdose treatment, which made the teen regain consciousness before being taken to hospital by paramedics.

Police did not charge anyone in this case.

A new federal law states that if you report an overdose for yourself, or someone else, you won’t be charged by police with drug possession.

Officers began carrying naloxone at the end of April. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist drug that prevents or reverses the effects of opioids.

MD Ambulance paramedics and Saskatoon fire fighters also carry emergency overdose treatment kits.
