The Saskatoon Health Region says it will cut some support staff and impose a temporary hiring freeze as part of a plan to save $34 million as it works to balance its budget.
Dan Florizone, president and CEO of the region, says balancing the budget will not be easy.
The plans also calls for making the region more efficient and improving management practices.
Florizone says the region hopes to minimize layoffs, but notes that 78 per cent of the region's expenses are for salaries and benefits.
The region says it continues to experience overcapacity and financial challenges that are putting pressure on the health system.
Last fiscal year the region ran a $35.7 million deficit.
