Deep freeze continues for Regina, southern Saskatchewan

Those in the province’s capital are continuing to face the effects of a large cold front that’s descended over the province.

A bitterly cold artic airmass has led to wind chill values nearing -45 C across southern Saskatchewan Monday morning – leading to extreme cold warnings issued over the weekend to remain in effect.

Wind chill values are expected to moderate overnight Monday, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

Temperatures are forecasted to rise to a high of -3 C Tuesday for Regina – representing a shift of around 40 C – far above the seasonal average.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk,” the ECCC warning read.

“Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter. Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.”

The warnings cover most of the province, with the affected communities spanning from Maple Creek to Estevan to Yorkton to Regina.

Saskatoon, Prince Albert, North Battleford and much of the far north are also under extreme cold warnings.

The only region currently excluded from the warnings, as of Monday morning, is a stretch of northwest Saskatchewan including communities such as Buffalo Narrows and Île-à-la-Crosse.
