Premier Brad Wall says the province is looking into expanding SaskTel connectivity across Saskatchewan -- especially in rural areas.
Wall said he is working with the minister of SaskTel and appointing a new legislative secretary to write a report on the cost of installing improved Internet coverage across the province.
“SaskTel will need some capital to do this. This will not be an inexpensive proposition. We don’t know the amount yet. We’re at the beginning of this effort,” Wall said.
Wall made the proposition to improve WiFi at a funding announcement Tuesday at Innovation Place.
The provincial government is giving $250,000 to Co. Labs, Saskatchewan’s first tech incubator. Co. Labs helps local businesses grow by offering office and mentorship.
Some of the startups in the tech incubator pitched their business ideas to Wall and Innovation Minister Jeremy Harrison. Wall brought up the proposition to improve and expand SaskTel after hearing each pitch needed Internet connectivity for their business model.
“I’m hopeful that by the next budget, we’re going to be able to roll out the most aggressive and expansive mobile and Internet coverage in the country,” Wall said, adding he wants to put Saskatoon on the map in the tech industry.
