A new multimillion-dollar lab at Royal University Hospital is expected to cut waiting times for heart patients in Saskatchewan.
The $5.5 million lab electrophysiology lab that officially opened Wednesday will offer patients from across the province assessment and treatment of simple and complex arrhythmias.
Beginning June 26, procedures will be performed two days a week, with the long-term target being five days a week.
The new, state-of-the-art facility, considered one of the best in North America, will decrease the wait time for arrhythmia related procedures from 12 to 18 months to three to sixth months.
Dr. Kelly Coverett, a cardiologist at the RUH, says the lab will allow doctors to give superior treatment.
"With the work of the RUH Foundation and the support of the health region, we now have that equipment available for us. The physicians and the care team can offer patients procedures that you would be able to receive anywhere around the world."
