A man from Cumberland House is facing a second-degree murder charge after a woman’s death in the northeastern Saskatchewan community.

RCMP said police responded to a call around 6 a.m. Thursday of an unresponsive woman on Deschambeault Avenue in Cumberland House.

Paramedics were on scene when police arrived but were unable to revive the woman. The woman, identified as 21-year-old Carissa Ballantyne, was declared dead on scene, according to RCMP.

A suspect was quickly identified and arrested, police said.

The man, also 21, has since been charged with second-degree murder. His first court appearance is set for Monday in La Ronge.

He and Ballantyne were known to each other.
