A Saskatoon hospital is continuing the battle to stop the spread of an outbreak.

On Friday it was discovered 15 staff and patients at St. Paul's Hospital were suffering from a gastrointestinal illness much like the Norwalk virus.

Hospital officials say additional cases were found during the weekend, bringing the total to 23 patients and five staff members. The most recent cases were identified Saturday, giving officials cause to believe the outbreak has been contained.

The Saskatoon Health Region is not permitting visitors on two units of the hospital, including surgery 5B and fifth floor medicine.

Officials say it is likely the units won't be re-opened to admissions, transfers and visitors this week.

The health region says that is an important step in helping to limit further spread of the illness.

Symptoms of the Norwalk -like illness include diarrhea and vomiting.
