Fire crews were called to a house fire on the 500 block of Avenue l North around 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Before fire fighters arrived, the lone occupant of the house tried to put out the blaze himself.

Evan Wilson says he was woken up by his neighbour knocking on his door, asking him to call 911 because his house was on fire.

“He was shaken up. He was running back to pull things out of his house. I got him to stop doing that and we gave him a glass of water."

Fire fighters say the man in the house tried to put out the fire himself, but when he couldn't he left the home. He called fire officials, who arrived to find smoke pouring from the upper floors of the house. They found a mattress on fire, which they dragged outside and extinguished.

Officials say no one was hurt, though the occupant of the house was taken to hospital. The cause is still under investigation.

Crews estimate the damage to be around $30,000.
