A high-collision stretch of highway near Martensville now has a reduced speed limit.

On Tuesday, the speed limit on Highway 12 was reduced to 90 km/h from 110 km/h along a stretch of roadway that runs from two kilometres south of city to one kilometre north. The change applies to both northbound and southbound lanes.

The province has also identified the location for a future overpass and Martensville mayor Kent Muench says reducing the speed limit is a start

“It doesn’t hurt to try dropping it to 90 km/h,” Muench said. “I'm hopeful that will reduce the incidents of accidents and fatalities.”

The province says the speed reduction, along with a similar case on Highway 1 East of Regina, is being introduced as a pilot project and may be expanded to other highways if it proves to be successful.
