A man charged in the death of a 28-year-old woman found dead on a snowmobile trail near Prince Albert has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter and causing indignity to human remains.

Todd Daniel McKeaveney, who was charged in the death of Monica Burns, entered the pleas in a Prince Albert court Tuesday morning. He was sentenced to 13 years, minus time served, after the Crown and defence issued a joint submission requesting the sentence.

Burns, whose body was found north of Prince Albert in January 2015, was from the Sturgeon Lake First Nation.

Her friends and family held a smudge ceremony before Tuesday’s court proceedings.

McKeaveney, who was arrested about two weeks after Burns’ body was found, pleaded not guilty to a second-degree murder charge in April of last year.
