A 57-year-old man taken into police custody Tuesday was found dead in his cell Wednesday morning. Saskatoon Police and the Chief Coroner are investigating.

The man was arrested for public intoxication in the 100 block of 3rd Avenue North at approximately 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. He was assessed on arrival by an on-duty paramedic and was checked on regularly overnight by detention staff.

Police said the province has been notified, and an independent investigator with Saskatchewan Justice has been assigned to oversee the investigation.

The cause of death will be released once an autopsy takes place.
